The contaminants that are in post-fire environments can linger for months. There are many carcinogens in the post-fire environment and the problem is that they are not easily detected by the human senses. For example, overexposure to formaldehyde may lead to a seeming benign runny nose. You cannot smell or taste it. This compared to a low dose acid gas exposure which may cause irritation of the mucous membranes in your nose and eyes. Exposure immediately results in some level of discomfort if you are unprotected and you will either self-evacuate the area or reach for the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that probably should have been donned before entering the area.
